DNA and RNA Sequencing Solutions

DNA Sequencing and Genotyping are techniques to identify the base composition of a DNA or RNA molecule. Both these techniques rely onthe size-based separation of DNA molecules by electrophoresis through a polymer gel.

With DNA sequencing, each strand of DNA analyzed is one base longer than the previous strand. The end of each strand has a dye that tells the software the type base that is present at the end of the strand (i.e. A, G, C, T). After separation and analysis the software compiles all of the terminal bases present in the separation and prints out the sequence of the strand analyzed.

With DNA genotyping, you are merely “cutting” DNA at sites based on the restriction enzyme you select. After cutting, the DNA fragments are separated via a size based separation to determine the length of the fragments created by the restriction enzyme.

Although there are several manufacturers of Sequencing Systems, including Beckman, GE Healthcare and Applied Biosystems. The most popular manufacturer of capillary sequencers is Applied BioSystems(ABI) with over 90% of the sequencers currently in use being various models from ABI.
